Fire Department 10 Year Capital Improvement

The City of Mauldin’s Fire Department is committed to improving their performance in all aspects of fire suppression and prevention for the Mauldin Fire Service Area. To assist the Fire Department in improving their already outstanding program, the Fire 10 Year Capital Improvement Plan has several elements and strategies that will help advance the Fire Department. The plan projects what personnel, equipment and apparatus, and number of stations the department will need to continue to protect and serve citizens in the Mauldin Fire Service Area.

The goals of the Fire 10 Year Capital Improvement Plan include the addition of fire stations, equipment, and needed personnel. Two other main goals for the plan include the lowering response times and obtaining a lower ISO rating. The ultimate purpose of the plan is to save lives, protect property, and educate citizens about fire safety and prevention. Please read below for a more complete description of the 10 year plan objectives.

Mauldin Fire Department 10 Year Capital Improvement Plan Goals

Addition of Fire Substations, Equipment and Apparatus, and Personnel

  • Currently there are two substations and one headquarters that service the Mauldin Fire Service Area. The population in Mauldin and all over Greenville County is rapidly growing and the Fire Department must be able to protect the expanding number of households and businesses. There was a 46% increase in total calls for fire service from 2005 to 2007 and the Fire Service Area is expected to be one of the region’s highest growth areas through 2030. The addition of fire substations in the Mauldin Fire Service Area will accommodate the future development.
  • Equipment and apparatus necessary to provide fire suppression services is expected to grow in the next few years as the population increases and more residential and business structures are built.
  • The Mauldin Fire Department provides EMT related services and Primary First Responders. More firefighters and training will be needed as fire sub stations are added and services expanded.

Lower Response Times

  • The addition of fire substations to the fire service area will yield faster response times of the first responders to the scene of an accident or fire.
  • The hiring of more staff and fire fighters in the department when the positions are needed will also improve response times and overall fire suppression service.

Improved ISO Rating

  • The ISO, or Insurance Services Office, evaluates local fire departments using a Fire Suppression Rating Schedule (FSRS). The ISO analyzes three aspects of a fire department to determine the overall rating. The three categories are a department’s response to fire alarms, engine companies within the department, and the community’s water supply. Fire departments are rated on a scale ranging from 1 to 10. 1 is the best ISO rating and 10 is the worst ISO rating.
  • The Mauldin Fire Department has an ISO rating of 3. Other municipalities close to Mauldin have also excelled in the ratings. The City of Greenville has an ISO rating of 1 and the City of Greer has an ISO rating of 2. The Mauldin Fire Department will likely lower their ISO rating and increase safety with the addition of fire sub stations, equipment and apparatus, and firefighters. With the improvements proposed in the 10 year capital improvement plan, the department hopes to lower its already excellent ISO rating.
