Cultural Center
Master Plan
In 2003, DP3 Architects created a feasibility study & master plan for the Mauldin Cultrual Center. Clemson University’s Department of Planning and Landscape Architecture updated the master plan for the 13.9 acres surrounding the Mauldin Cultural Center. Students and professors conducted detailed analysis of the Mauldin Cultural Center and the land surrounding the facility to revise the master plan. The board will use the plan as a tool to guide the remainder of development for the Mauldin Cultural Center. The project began in the spring semester of 2009 and continued through the summer sessions of 2009.
Students were given a development program for the site that includes an amphitheater, updated parking requirements, vehicle and pedestrian circulation, botanical gardens and arboretum, a veterans memorial, and site furnishings such as signage and benches. Students were directed to minimize and avoid impacts on existing trees and to develop a tree replanting plan for the site, and to establish visual and physical connections between the cultural center site and the surrounding community.
The students produced eight concept plans at the beginning of the project. These initial concept plans were refined to produce four detailed plans, which were presented for public comment and reaction. Based on public input, a graduate level landscape architecture student produced a recommended master plan. The master plan was approved by both Mauldin City Council and the Mauldin Cultural Center Foundation Board. Please click on the links below to view the final report.

About the Mauldin Cultural Center
The Mauldin Cultural Center is a retired schoolhouse with a new mission. Built in 1936, the building served as a school for Mauldin children for many years. A few years ago the City of Mauldin purchased the school building and the surrounding 13.9 acres of land. The decision was made to turn the old school building into a Cultural Center that would serve as a resource for the community and bring more arts and culture to Mauldin. Today, several organizations call the Mauldin Cultural Center their home. The Mauldin Cultural Center currently houses the Mauldin Chamber of Commerce and is the meeting place for the Rotary Club, the Woodcarvers, the Lions Club, the Garden Club, the Upstate Young Marines, the Disabled Veterans, and the Greenville in Harmony Chorus.
Mauldin Cultural Center Foundation Board
The Mauldin Cultural Center has a newly restructured board of citizens and is working on many projects such as the auditorium renovation and master plan study. Citizens can expect to see many changes to both the building and the organization.
Auditorium Renovation
Towards the rear of the Mauldin Cultural Center sits an auditorium that served Mauldin Elementary students for many years as a cafeteria, assembly hall, and gymnasium. The Mauldin Cultural Center Foundation Board has exciting plans to renovate the existing auditorium in order to house and promote cultural and community events. The renovated structure will serve several purposes for Mauldin: a multipurpose auditorium and meeting space, an exhibition hall, and a performance theater. Once completed, the Mauldin Cultural Center Auditorium will be available to the citizens of Mauldin and the community.
Recently, the Mauldin Cultural Center Foundation Board made a recommendation to Mauldin City Council for the selection of a firm to create a design and renovation plan for the existing auditorium. Neal Prince Architects was chosen to complete the Auditorium Renovation Project. The Board is moving forward with the preservation and development process with hopes to optimize the auditorium’s potential. Two public meetings were held with Neal Prince in December of 2008 for citizens to attend and provide input towards the project. More public meetings on the auditorium and the master plan were held in late 2009 and early 2010. To view the proposed auditorium renovation plan, click on the link below.
